A very beautiful Summar 50mm f2 with collapsible chrome barrel. Carefully used by our customer and has returned to us once again — this marks its sixth sale through our shop.
Leitz code SUMUS, serial number in the 200,000 range, manufactured in 1934. Pre-war uncoated lens with hexagonal aperture. The aperture scale uses continental markings (f2, 2.2, 3.2–), and the distance scale is in meters. Filter size is A36, and the matching genuine hood is SOOMP.
This is one of Leica’s classic standard lenses, offering the characteristic double-Gauss rendering with rich bokeh and natural vignetting. Wide open it gives a soft, atmospheric image, while stopping down yields a sharper yet still gentle depiction.
This particular lens has exceptionally good glass and delivers stable, pleasing performance.
The Summar evolved from the early rigid-barrel version to the black-front type, and finally to this most common production model, each available in both nickel and chrome finishes. Toward the end of the production run, the rare “Tropen-Summar” appeared quietly. It would be fascinating to collect them all.
There is only minimal wear on the collapsible section, and the barrel itself is in beautiful condition with no noticeable scratches or dents.
It was fully overhauled in 2021, and thanks to the meticulous service, the aperture ring and focusing helicoid still operate with exceptional smoothness.
Matching its fine appearance, the glass is perfectly clear with no cleaning marks, haze, or balsam separation. Even under typically challenging conditions for a Summar—wide open, without a hood, and against the light—it produces clean images without noticeable veiling. Rangefinder coupling is precise.
Comes with front and rear caps and the original box. The Walz filter blends naturally with the lens, looking just like a genuine accessory.
A truly rare example in outstanding condition.
