Made by Nippon Kogaku, Nikon S2 black paint. Early version. Serial number 6176xxx. This is from a later batch within the early black-paint production.
Compared to the later version, the early S2 black paint models have a greater amount of painted black surfaces, giving them an even stronger black-paint presence. With its sharp and confident look, this model has long been popular. The dials and even the edges are coated in matte black over brass, and the way the paint wears to reveal the metal underneath is deeply appealing.
The included Nikkor 5cm f/1.4 is the standard black barrel type from a slightly later period, with a chrome front. The lens barrel shows a tasteful amount of paint wear that matches well with the well-used look of the body.
The camera shows a well-used, timeworn character. The top cover and bottom plate display multiple dings and areas where the paint has worn off. One can easily imagine this being a trusted tool of a working photographer.
The body received a full overhaul by a specialist in December 2025, with ample time and cost invested in the service. Thanks to the meticulous work, the camera is now in excellent condition. The finder is crisp and clear, and the rangefinder patch has strong contrast.
Although the exact timing is unknown, the shutter curtains have been replaced with titanium ones of the same type used in the SP. According to the technician, the quality of the replacement work is high, suggesting that a skilled repair specialist or possibly the manufacturer carried out the modification. If the camera had indeed been used professionally, this upgrade would make perfect sense as a measure to prevent pinholes and enhance durability.
The included lens has smooth aperture movement. The inner elements show a few faint cleaning marks, but they should have virtually no impact on image quality, and there is no haze.
Comes with the original front cap featuring the onigiri mark. Perfect as a dependable user camera.
