The Leica M3, the camera that marked the beginning of the Leica M system. This example is an early model in the 860,000 serial number range, featuring the distinctive bud-shaped advance lever and double-stroke film advance. Made by Leitz Canada, it is also known as the Big M due to the larger M3 engraving compared with German-made examples.

One of only 380 cameras shipped in March 1956. It is equipped with a self-timer, a glass pressure plate, and an ASA dial marked up to 1000. Its exceptional build quality reflects the remarkable energy and confidence of Leitz during its golden age.

The double-stroke advance has a short movement, producing a crisp and satisfying cha-cha rhythm. It is the kind of camera that makes you want to keep firing the shutter even without film. Even our staff cannot resist enjoying it while carrying out inspections.

Early M3 bodies showing so little use are becoming increasingly rare. Also highly recommended for collectors.

This is an exceptionally clean example. The top cover shows no noticeable scratches or scuffs, and there is only minimal wear around the strap lugs. The base plate has just three or four light scuff marks, while the beautiful matte chrome finish still retains its fine texture and lustre. The black-painted section of the back door shows slight paint wear and a few light scuffs. Even among the Leica M3 bodies we have handled, this one ranks among the very best in terms of condition.

A full overhaul was completed in July 2026. The film advance and all other controls now operate smoothly. The viewfinder is also clear, allowing you to fully enjoy the superb viewing experience unique to the Leica M3.
