Angénieux 90mm f1.8, Type P1 early version. A rare genuine Leica screw mount lens. Manufactured by P. Angenieux of France, a company renowned as a maker of cine lenses. The serial number of this example is in the 230,000 range, produced in 1952. Distance scale in feet. The filter size is a rather uncommon 56mm.
An Ernostar-type design with 4 groups and 5 elements. A medium telephoto lens that delivers truly Angénieux-like, dramatic rendering. The color reproduction does not disappoint in color photography, and it is equally enjoyable for monochrome shooting where an even more dramatic expression can be achieved.
Whether in color or monochrome, it produces beautiful images full of expressive character.
As expected from a fast telephoto lens, focusing is very delicate. This example was highly praised by our staff member who conducted the test shooting, and it allows you to enjoy accurate focusing using the Leica rangefinder.
There are quite a few small scratches, scuffs, and some fading overall, showing a fair amount of use. It clearly appears to have been well-used in its day.
In 2026 the lens received a full overhaul including focus adjustment. The aperture and helicoid now operate very smoothly. As is often the case with Angénieux P1 lenses, many examples suffer from questionable rangefinder coupling accuracy, and this one also showed a tendency toward back focus when it first arrived. However, after careful adjustment of the coupling and focus, it has been brought into excellent alignment with accurate rangefinder coupling. The lens actually traveled back and forth twice between our shop and the technician, resulting in twice the effort and twice the love put into its restoration.
The glass shows a somewhat larger number of cleaning marks on the rear element and very minor cleaning marks on the front element, but there is no haze. The results of the test shooting were excellent.
Sample images have been posted in our test gallery. We hope you will enjoy taking a look. All photographs were taken wide open using the rangefinder for focusing. The rendering is soft yet clearly captures the subject, with a beautiful sense of depth and sheen. Without exaggeration, it is a truly wonderful lens.
