Elmar 50mm f3.5, nickel barrel. Leitz product code ELMAR. This is the new Elmar from the era of the Leica DII and DIII. Serial number in the 170,000 range, manufactured in 1933. Uncoated. Distance scale in meters. Helicoid number 7. 4 elements in 3 groups. Rangefinder-coupled.
The standard lens that laid the foundation for Leica’s reputation as we know it today.
Even after more than 90 years, this old lens has not lost its charm, and it is still more than ready for active use. One cannot help but admire Leitz’s craftsmanship. It is also a joy to choose a partner camera across generations, from Barnack Leicas to M bodies and even digital M cameras.
In addition to its reliable rendering, the understated glow of the nickel finish and the lightweight, compact build that modern lenses can hardly hope to match are also part of its appeal.
It has a tasteful appearance that shows the many years it has lived through. There is a slight distortion to the nameplate, along with small marks and scuffs in various areas, but it is just the right kind of condition for carefree everyday use.
Fully overhauled in April 2026, including focus adjustment. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture and helicoid operate very smoothly, giving the lens a stress-free feel in use. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on, and focusing is accurate.
There are some light cleaning marks on the front element and some yellowing to the glass, but these should have little effect on actual images except in situations such as backlight. The anti-reflection matte lacquer inside the barrel has been carefully reapplied, so you can expect a nicely controlled, crisp rendering. The results of our test shooting were also good.
