The final model in the Barnack Leica line, the Leica IIIg. Leitz product code GOOEF.
Serial number in the 820,000 range, manufactured in 1956. The serial number engraving on this IIIg differs slightly from that of the typical IIIg, showing a style reminiscent of Leitz Canada. Around this serial range, production of the IIIf, IIIg, and M3 overlapped between Wetzlar and Midland, and this IIIg seems to be a transitional piece. The internal body serial number matches the number engraved on the top cover.
Built with no compromise in design or cost, its exceptional craftsmanship is evident at a glance. Incorporating Leica M3 technology, the IIIg features parallax-corrected bright frames for 50 mm and 90 mm lenses. The finder image is outstandingly bright and clear, making it the most user-friendly of all Barnack Leicas.
This item was previously sold by our shop and has now returned to us, having been carefully used by its owner.
The exterior remains in beautiful condition, just as when it was last sold. There is a small mark near the left strap lug and a tiny bit of plating wear on the ASA indicator at the back, but aside from these minor points, there are no noticeable scuffs or scratches. The vulcanite covering shows very little wear and retains a smooth, pleasant texture. All parts are original, with no chips or missing pieces.
It was overhauled in 2024, and the film advance, shutter, and self-timer all operate smoothly and reliably. The viewfinder image is bright and clear, and the rangefinder patch shows excellent contrast.
A very clean Leica IIIg in fine working order—both collectible and perfectly suited for regular use.
