Elmar-C 40mm f2. Made in Germany. Leitz product code 11542. Introduced in 1973 as the standard lens supplied for the Leitz Minolta CL and Leica CL. Serial number in the 2.7 million range, manufactured in 1974. Optical design consists of 4 groups and 6 elements. Minimum focusing distance is 0.8 meters.
The focal length, sitting perfectly between 35mm and 50mm, offers an exceptionally versatile field of view with the distinctive contrast and character typical of a Summicron. Compared to the Summicron 35mm, it is also more compact and lightweight, which makes it even more appealing. With sufficient brightness and a field of view that works both as a standard and semi-wide lens, it is an ideal companion for travel photography.
Compatible filters are Series 5.5 or, with some limitation, E39. The Series 5.5 filter is held between the lens and the dedicated rubber hood. Note that E39 filters have a different thread pitch and will only screw in partially.
There are small spots of paint loss around the edges of the filter rim, aperture ring, and focusing ring, but overall this Summicron-C remains in beautiful condition.
Fully overhauled in November 2025. The aperture and focusing rings move smoothly with a pleasant, appropriate resistance, and the rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned, ensuring comfortable shooting with any M-mount Leica.
No haze or scratches are visible. When viewed under a strong LED light, slight deterioration of the coating can be seen, but it does not affect image quality. The results of the test shots were excellent.
Comes with genuine front and rear caps and a 13131 UVa filter. As mentioned above, the E39 filter does not screw in completely, so it should be considered primarily for protective use.
