Summaron 35mm f3.5, early version, A36 model. Leica screw mount. Serial number in the 760,000 range, manufactured in 1950. Product code SOONC. Optical design consists of 6 elements in 4 groups, double Gauss type. Distance scale in feet. Accepts A36 slip-on filters.
Introduced in 1946 as the successor to the Elmar 35mm f3.5. Compared to the Elmar, it is slightly taller and heavier, yet still remains very compact and highly portable. Its classic old-lens design is also part of its charm.
It delivers high central resolution, and when shot wide open, the natural vignetting creates a dramatic atmosphere. The lens offers wonderful rendering, yet thanks to its relatively large production numbers, it remains one of Leica’s most affordable and reliable classic wide-angle lenses. However, the Summaron is also known as a lens prone to haze, and image quality can vary greatly depending on the condition of the glass.
Compatible hood: FOOKH.
The exterior is very clean with no noticeable scuffs and hardly any signs of use.
Fully overhauled in November 2025. Thanks to thorough maintenance, both the aperture and helicoid operate smoothly with excellent feel. Rangefinder coupling is perfectly accurate.
When held under a strong LED light, a slight coating deterioration can be seen on the inner elements, and under magnification, one small spot of balsam separation is visible, but neither has any noticeable impact on actual photography. The glass condition is overall very good, and test shots, including those against backlight, produced excellent results.
Comes with non-original front and rear caps.
