Based on the large-aperture telephoto lens FL 300mm F2.8 S.S.C. (released in February 1974), which earned high acclaim from professionals and photojournalists for its use of fluorite, this lens was redesigned with improved chromatic aberration correction and adapted for the FD mount, supporting open-aperture metering and automatic diaphragm operation. Released in October 1975.
It features a 5-group, 6-element optical construction with a 9-blade diaphragm and a built-in hood. The minimum focusing distance is 3.5 meters. Despite its bright F2.8 aperture, the combination of fluorite and optical glass effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, delivering high resolution and contrast even at full aperture. Canon’s proprietary Super Spectrum Coating (S.S.C.) ensures optimal color balance.
The helicoid employs a new bearing mechanism, providing a very light and smooth focusing action. The newly designed diaphragm unit eliminates the time lag that had been a drawback of automatic diaphragms in large-aperture telephoto lenses, resulting in significantly improved operability. It represents a true evolution in Canon’s telephoto lens lineup.
Although not included with this lens, a dedicated 2× extender was also introduced in the FD mount. When combined, the FD 300mm F2.8 S.S.C. Fluorite functions as an FD 600mm F5.6 S.S.C. Fluorite, maintaining outstanding optical performance.
There are minor areas of paint loss on the rear end of the barrel and the tip of the hood from normal use, but overall the lens shows very little wear and remains in excellent cosmetic condition. Considering that most examples of the FL 300mm F2.8 Fluorite have seen heavy use, this one is remarkably clean.
All mechanical operations are smooth. The glass is clear and free from cleaning marks or haze, offering a bright and crisp view.
Comes with the original caps, a 105mm UV filter, and a non-original carrying case. A regular 1x drop-in filter is installed.
