Summicron 35mm f2 with a chrome barrel, the so-called eight-element version. Made in Germany. The Leitz product code is SAWOM, later 11308. Serial number is in the 2.13 million range, manufactured in 1965. Minimum focusing distance is 0.7 m, and the filter size is E39.
In addition to its superb imaging performance, it has the functional beauty characteristic of German industrial design.
At full aperture it delivers a gentle, soft rendering; stop down slightly and the three-dimensionality increases noticeably; stop down further and it transitions into a crisp, high-resolution look while still retaining a touch of softness. A truly Leica-like style and Leica-like rendering.
The glass on this example is clean. The demand for the eight-element version keeps rising, and fine examples are becoming harder to find each year.
Recommended hoods are ITDOO or IROOA, and later 12585 or 12504 are also compatible. A lens that is a joy both to shoot with and to admire.
Light signs of use can be seen on the front edge and the base of the barrel, but only minor rubbing from normal handling. Overall, it shows very little wear and has a clean appearance.
Fully overhauled in November 2025. As always, the aperture and helicoid have been finished to a wonderfully smooth feel. The infinity stop also engages gently and precisely.
The inner element shows slight coating deterioration, but it is so minimal that it can only be detected under a strong LED light and has virtually no impact on image quality. Test shots were also very good.
Genuine front and rear caps and a UVa filter are included.
