Summaron 28mm f5.6, commonly known as the Red Summaron. One stop faster than its predecessor, the Hektor 28mm f6.3. This example has a serial number in the 1.55 million range, made in 1958. Leica product code is SNOOX. It features meter scale engravings, convenient for snapshots. The optical design is a 4-group 6-element Gauss type.

Introduced in 1955 as the successor to the Hektor 28mm f6.3 and produced until 1963. The filter size is the same as the Hektor 28mm, 36mm slip-on, A36.

It was made during the golden era of postwar Leica, in the time of the M3 through MP to M2. The lens offers not only excellent rendering but also outstanding chrome finish quality and a design that, even after nearly 70 years, still feels timeless. It remains highly popular today. When paired with its dedicated rectangular hood SOOBK, it achieves a particularly striking look, showcasing the refined styling typical of Leica products of this era.

Although a modern reissue recently caused a stir, the original version was produced in relatively small numbers, making it increasingly difficult to find one in fine condition.

This is an item previously sold by our store, carefully used by the customer, and now returned to us. As with the previous sale, there are no noticeable scratches, marks, or dents, and the exterior remains in excellent condition. The chrome plating on the mount surface is still shiny.
In 2025 it underwent a full overhaul, resulting in a very smooth helicoid movement and a smoothly operating aperture ring. Rangefinder coupling is spot on and focusing is accurate.

The glass shows only slight balsam separation at the edge of the middle element and a very faint hairline on the rear element, but these have no effect on image quality. For a Red Summaron, which is often known for cloudiness, the glass is remarkably clean. Shooting test results were also excellent.
