Fat Elmar 90mm f4 (L)

Item No. 025551

※About rarity

Fat Elmar 9cm f4. The Leitz product code is ELANG. The combination of black paint and nickel plating gives it a wonderful vintage character. Serial number in the 90,000 range, manufactured in 1932. 3 elements in 4 groups. The helicoid is marked in feet.

While some Fat Elmars are non-coupled, this example is rangefinder-coupled. Uncoated. There is a Germany engraving positioned right in the center near the base of the barrel, suggesting it was intended for export. An engraving in this location is quite rare.

In Japan, it has long been affectionately nicknamed Daruma by collectors. First introduced in 1931 as a non-rangefinder-coupled lens for the Leica C, it evolved properly into a coupled version with the release of the Leica DII in 1932. The following year, in 1933, the barrel was slimmed down into the standard 90mm Elmar, often referred to as the Thin Elmar, and the Fat Elmar disappeared from the lineup.

This Fat Elmar pairs beautifully with black and nickel bodies such as the Leica DII and DIII. Production numbers were limited, and many examples were heavily used, making well-preserved specimens increasingly difficult to find.

Faint brass is visible on the front rim of the barrel and along the edges of the helicoid, and there is some minor touch-up on the helicoid ring. However, the black paint remains well preserved overall, making this a very attractive example. No noticeable dents or significant marks are found. Considering that more than 90 years have passed since its manufacture, it is clear that this lens has been carefully cherished throughout its life.

Fully overhauled in December 2025. Thanks to meticulous servicing, the aperture and helicoid operate with exceptional smoothness. Rangefinder coupling is accurate and performs well.

The glass shows no noticeable scratches or haze and is impressively clear and clean. You can fully enjoy its original rendering character. Test shooting results were also excellent.

A genuine bakelite front cap and metal rear cap are included.

A beautifully finished black and nickel example, highly recommended for collection as well.
