Late version of the Elmar 50mm f2.8. Leitz product code 11112. Serial number in the 1.91 million range, manufactured in 1961. E39 filter thread. Dual feet/meter scale.
This is the later f2.8 version. Its modern design is hard to believe for a lens made nearly 60 years ago. With its refined styling and functional elegance, it pairs beautifully even with current Leica digital bodies. Produced during Leitz’s postwar golden age, the build quality and finishing are truly superb.
The Elmar f2.8 is known for its slightly soft and gentle rendering at or near full aperture, while stopping down brings a crisp and sharp image. Compatible hoods include ITOOY, IROOA, ITDOO, and 12585.
Most f2.8 Elmars tend to suffer from haze that has penetrated the new-type glass and cannot be fully removed. However, this particular example is exceptionally clear, with beautifully clean glass. Although production numbers were relatively high, finding one with such clean optics is quite rare.
Minor signs of wear can be seen on the base and the collapsible section, but overall it retains a very clean appearance. It preserves much of the atmosphere of how it must have looked when new.
Fully overhauled in February 2026. The aperture and helicoid have been adjusted to an exceptionally smooth operation. Rangefinder coupling is perfectly accurate.
Although the Elmar 2.8 is often known for haze issues, this example is free from haze and beautifully clear. No noticeable cleaning marks are present. A fine example that allows you to fully enjoy its original rendering performance.
The original box, plastic case, and genuine aluminum front cap are included.
A truly hard-to-find condition.
