Summicron 35mm f2, 2nd generation, early 6-element model. Leitz product code 11309. Serial number in the 2.39-million range, made in 1970 in Germany. Filter size E39.
Although the 6-element version was produced in fair numbers, it has become increasingly difficult to find examples in excellent condition, following the scarcity trend of the earlier 8-element type.
Often overshadowed by the 8-element predecessor, the 6-element version offers its own refined appeal—featuring a well-balanced helicoid rotation angle, a focus knob that fits naturally under the fingers, moderately subdued color rendition, and a rendering that is neither overly sharp nor overly soft. It is a lens full of character and capability.
Only the horned model has a specific design feature where the horn and focus-ring tab interfere slightly, so the infinity and aperture index marks are intentionally offset—this alignment is correct for this version.
Compatible hoods are the same as those for the Summilux 35mm, namely the 12504, or the 12585 shared with the 50mm lenses. Compact and lightweight, this lens pairs beautifully with any Leica M-series body.
There is a very slight paint loss at the tip of the horn, but otherwise it shows almost no signs of use and is in excellent condition. Fully overhauled in October 2025. While many 6-element versions tend to have a slightly loose mechanical feel, this example has been carefully serviced, resulting in exceptionally smooth helicoid and aperture ring operation. The rangefinder coupling is perfect, and focusing is accurate. The lens shows minor coating deterioration on an internal element, but there are no noticeable cleaning marks or haze, and it remains beautifully clear. Test shots also produced excellent results.
Comes with original plastic front cap, plastic case, and original box.
