Summaron 35mm f3.5 early type, A36 model. Leica screw mount. Serial number in the 1.01 million range, made in 1952. Product code SOONC. A 4-group 6-element double-Gauss design. Distance scale in meters.
Introduced in 1946 as the successor to the Elmar 35mm f3.5. Compared to the Elmar it is slightly taller and a little heavier, yet still compact with excellent handling. The classic old-lens aesthetics are part of its charm.
It delivers high central resolution, and near wide open the natural vignetting creates a dramatic atmosphere.
It is a classic Leica wide-angle lens that offers wonderful image quality while remaining relatively affordable thanks to the large production numbers.
The compatible hood is FOOKH, and the filter is the A36 slip-on type.
The mount face shows a number of small marks around the edge, but aside from that the barrel is quite clean with very little wear from use.
It received a full overhaul in October 2025. Thanks to careful servicing, the aperture ring moves with a pleasant, precise click and the helicoid feels exceptionally smooth. Rangefinder coupling is spot on, and focusing accuracy is excellent.
In the glass, there is one small separation spot along the edge of an inner element, several extremely fine cleaning marks, and the coating on the surface just in front of the aperture is missing. However, none of these have any noticeable impact on image quality. The haze often seen in Summaron lenses is not present. Test shots also delivered excellent results.
A great lens for practical use.
