In Japan this type is called the Heavy Cam, while overseas it is often referred to as the Snail Cam. The rangefinder coupling cam is extremely thick and slanted, a characteristic seen on early Elmar 35mm lenses. This example also features a very rare flat-type infinity lock, found only on a small number of heavy cam lenses. Manufactured around 1930.
Full-rotation helicoid. Compatible genuine hoods include FLQOO and FOOKH. Our original FB-07 Elmar 50mm hood also fits.
Please note that when this Elmar 35mm is mounted on a Leica D III with slow-speed shutter, the infinity lock may interfere with the slow-speed dial and prevent mounting. We can modify the lens so that the infinity lock does not interfere. This is a reversible modification and can be returned to the original specification. Please feel free to consult us.
There is one area of wear and plating loss near the stopper at the base of the lens barrel, caused by contact with the lever. Aside from this, light surface wear consistent with age can be seen overall, but for an early nickel Elmar, the exterior condition is quite good.
This is a lens that combines the dignity of more than 90 years since its manufacture with a beauty that remains fully usable today.
Fully overhauled in December 2025. The aperture and helicoid rings operate extremely smoothly. The internal anti-reflection matte lacquer inside the lens barrel has also been carefully reapplied, promising a more crisp and well-defined rendering.
The lens shows very faint cleaning marks on both the front and rear elements, but these should have virtually no effect on actual photographs. There is no haze, and considering this is a heavy cam version, the glass condition is remarkably good.

The lens comes with an original Bakelite front cap and a somewhat well-used metal rear cap. A rare item.
