Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm f2.8 for Hasselblad 500 series. Serial number in the 1.59 million range. This is an early six-element version made in 1957, featuring beautiful golden coating. The lens contains radioactive glass and shows measurable activity on a dosimeter. The helicoid scale is marked in feet.
Although early six-element Planars are well-known for issues such as coating deterioration or balsam separation and are often difficult to find in good condition, their popularity has remained solid over the years. Many examples show heavy wear, but this one has exceptionally clean glass — a rare find among the six-element Planars.
Originally sold by our shop, this lens was carefully used by its previous owner and has now returned to us. Welcome back!
It was overhauled by our technician in 2022, and for this third sale, it has once again been fully disassembled, cleaned, and inspected. Please note that since this early version of the six-element Planar features the first-generation design, the preview lever operates only when the lens is mounted on the camera body.
The barrel shows some moderate wear and minor scuffs from regular use, but there are no noticeable dents or plating loss. The aperture, shutter, and focusing rings all operate smoothly and precisely.
The glass shows slight coating wear and a few faint cleaning marks on the front and rear elements, yet it remains in very good condition for a six-element Planar. There is no sign of balsam separation, and the coating is well preserved across the entire surface.
A truly practical example, ready for use. Comes with the original Zeiss UV filter and lens hood.
