The first-generation Elmarit 28mm f2.8, early version, commonly known as the 9-element type. A popular red scale version. This example is made in Germany. The Leitz product code is 11801. Serial number in the 2.06 million range, manufactured in 1964. Non-retrofocus design with a 6-group, 9-element optical construction. Minimum focusing distance is 0.7 m.
With its elegant waisted barrel, crisp red engravings, black-painted infinity lock that settles beautifully into place, rich texture rendering, and gentle bokeh, this lens is regarded as one of the most sought-after among all Elmarit 28mm versions.
When the glass condition is good, the first-generation Elmarit delivers sharp images and smooth bokeh even wide open. Many 9-element examples are known to show balsam separation across the entire surface of the middle elements, which can sometimes look like haze and often results in softer rendering. This particular lens shows no balsam separation and offers excellent optical performance.
It accepts E48 filters, or Series VII filters when used with the 12501 hood. Please note that it cannot be mounted on the Leica M5 or CL.

Minor small marks and light rubs are present, with some paint loss on the black-painted stopper area and edges, but there are no dents or deep scratches.
Fully overhauled in December 2025. The operation of the aperture and helicoid, as well as the feel of the infinity stop engagement, are all very smooth. Rangefinder coupling is accurate.
Very faint cleaning marks can be seen on both the front and rear elements, but they are at a level that should have virtually no effect on actual photography. Shooting tests also produced very good results.
Sample images have been posted in our test-shot gallery. All were taken near wide open. We enjoyed the high resolution and crisp rendering characteristic of the first-version Elmarit.
A 12501M hood, UVa filter, third-party hood cap, and original front and rear caps are included.
