Leica IIIc Grey. Serial number in the 380,000 range, manufactured in 1942. A rare model produced in small numbers during World War II. Some units supplied to the German military bear engravings such as Luftwaffen-Eigentum, Heer, or W.H., but this one is said to be the civilian version of the military IIIc Grey. All paint is, of course, original.
The distinct bluish-grey paint gives it a crisp and dignified appearance, with all external parts finished in chrome. The shutter speed dial marking that had read Z since the Leica A model was changed to B at this stage.
Matched with a period-correct Summitar or Elmar, it creates an exceptionally appealing combination. A rare and collectible piece.
The brass base metal is exposed in several areas, giving it a wonderfully matured appearance. There is a slight dent near the serial number on the top cover. Many Leica IIIc Grey units have cracked vulcanite on the back, and this one is no exception—a vertical crack runs along the center of the rear covering. It has been properly repaired, so it should not spread any further.
This camera was in regular use by a customer until recently, and all functions operate smoothly. Both the viewfinder and rangefinder are bright and clear. A distinctive Barnack Leica that remains perfectly suitable for practical use.
