Angenieux 28mm f3.5 Type R11, Leica screw mount. This example is the early version, made by P. Angenieux in France in 1953. Rangefinder-coupled, with distance scale in feet. Retrofocus design, 6 elements in 6 groups, featuring beautiful purple and blue coatings.
The front of the lens flares outward slightly, giving it a distinctive constricted shape. The stylish combination of indigo anodized aluminum and finely knurled aluminum rings reflects the refined French craftsmanship.
Production numbers of the L-mount Angenieux 28mm were low, making it a rare and collectible lens. Its unique design looks superb not only on Barnack Leicas but also on black-paint and digital M-series bodies.
Incidentally, the filter thread of the Type R11 differs between versions—56.5 mm for the early type and 58.5 mm for the later one—a detail that continues to puzzle many Angenieux users.
Due to long years of use, the front end of the barrel has faded to a dark blue tone, which adds a truly appealing character. The combination of the deep navy barrel, red distance index line, and engraved markings on bare aluminum makes for a striking contrast—this is a lens you will want to keep using and let age beautifully.
It has been carefully serviced by the previous owner, and both the aperture and focusing helicoid operate with a smooth, pleasant feel. The rangefinder coupling is perfectly accurate.
There are some noticeable cleaning marks on the front and middle elements, but they have little to no effect on image quality. Test results were excellent, showing a rich, deeply nuanced rendering.
