Leitz ultra-wide-angle lens, the first-generation Super-Angulon 21mm f4. Code name SUMOM, later product code 11102L. Serial number in the 1.67 million range, manufactured in 1959. Dual distance scale in feet and meters. The filter size is the standard E39. Although branded Leitz, the lens was manufactured by Schneider. Incidentally, there are Super-Angulon lenses bearing Schneider serial numbers; these are extremely rare and regarded as true collector’s items.
Optical construction is 4 groups, 9 elements. This lens is Leica M mount, but by removing the set screw and detaching the coupling, it can also be used as a Leica screw mount lens. The minimum focusing distance is 0.4 m, while rangefinder coupling works from 1 m. This close-focusing capability is especially welcome when used on digital cameras with live view.
Because of its non-retrofocus design, the rear of the lens protrudes significantly. When mounting or removing the lens on digital cameras, please take great care to avoid damaging the interior of the camera. In addition, automatic exposure does not function correctly, so manual exposure operation is required. Please also note that with digital Leica M cameras other than the M11, color shift occurs toward the edges of the frame.
When paired with the original IWKOO hood, the lens takes on an exceptionally stylish appearance.
There are some minor scuff marks on the front edge of the lens barrel from attaching and removing a hood, but overall it shows relatively little signs of use and has a very clean appearance for a Super-Angulon 21mm.
The lens underwent a full overhaul twice, in September and December 2025, due to an amusing mishap where a lens that had just returned from service was accidentally sent out for servicing once again by our staff. We may have been a bit too thorough, just to be safe.
As you would expect, the helicoid action is outstanding. Focus adjustment was also carried out, and rangefinder coupling is spot on. Please note that a full overhaul is already performed to the highest possible standard in a single service, so having it done twice does not further change the result.
The glass is very clean, with only minimal coating wear. For an Angulon, edge separation is also quite limited, and overall the lens is in very good condition. Actual shooting tests produced excellent results, allowing you to fully enjoy the characteristic rendering of the Super-Angulon.
Original front and rear caps are included. The rear cap is from a slightly later period.
