A classic Elmar 5cm f3.5 housed in a chrome barrel. Helicoid number is 3. Distance scale is in meters. The helicoid is the half-turn type.
This early Elmar succeeded the Anastigmat and Elmax lenses used on the first Leica A models of the 1920s, and features glass supplied by C. P. Goerz. This particular example was later officially converted by Leitz into a Leica screw mount rangefinder-coupled lens. The conversion likely took place in the mid to late 1930s. The internal structure of the barrel still shows traces of its original A-type era.
Filter size is A36. The FISON hood and our FB-07 hood for Elmar 50mm, which allows aperture operation, are compatible.
A rare early Elmar housed in a chrome barrel, matching beautifully with both chrome and painted Leica bodies.
Light rub marks are present, but signs of use are minimal and the chrome finish still shines beautifully. There are no noticeable scratches or dings. Even with the later Leica factory modification, the lens is in remarkably good condition for something approaching ninety years old.
Fully overhauled in November 2025. Thanks to careful servicing, the feel of the aperture and focusing helicoid is exceptionally smooth. The internal baffles have also been refinished with matte anti-reflection lacquer, contributing to a more controlled and crisp rendering.
The front element shows a few faint cleaning marks, but there is no haze and the glass is clear throughout. The rear group has two tiny pin-point balsam separations, but they will not affect image quality.
A lens that lets you fully enjoy the unique rendering of the earliest Elmar. Test shots were excellent as well, and you are invited to take a look at our sample gallery.
Comes with original front and rear caps. The front cap is the rare flat type.
