The popular VALAU in nickel finish. This example is the later nickel VALAU with the hexagonal Leitz logo engraving.
Originally, it was designed as a hood to use the Leica L-mount Elmar 50mm f3.5 for enlarging work. It was an innovative accessory that made aperture operation in the darkroom dramatically easier. Today, however, it is more often used for shooting purposes.
Not only is it highly practical, but its design is also excellent, making it a perfect match for nickel Elmar 35mm and 50mm lenses. A successor, the VALOO, appeared after the war, but in terms of popularity, this VALAU—with its rich nickel texture and classical atmosphere—has the edge. Production numbers were small, and it is surprisingly difficult to find. For reference, a chrome version of the VALAU also exists, and that variant is even rarer.
There are light signs of use such as faint scuffs, but no dents or distortion. Overall, the nickel plating retains a beautiful luster, making this an exceptionally clean example for a VALAU.
Tested and confirmed to fit the Elmar 50mm f3.5 and Elmar 35mm f3.5. Aperture operation is smooth and works properly.
