Biotar 75mm f1.5, postwar model. Made by Carl Zeiss Jena, Germany. This is the popular compact aluminum barrel version with T coating, manufactured around 1949. It features a modified Gauss design with 4 groups and 6 elements. The focusing scale is in meters, and the minimum focusing distance is 1 meter.
Despite being a large-aperture, high-speed lens, it delivers solid image sharpness in the center even at full aperture, while offering rich old-lens character with swirling bokeh and gentle flare. A wonderful lens to enjoy on modern digital mirrorless cameras via an adapter.
There are some minor scratches and small dings, showing overall signs of use.
Fully overhauled in October 2025. Both the aperture ring and focusing helicoid now operate smoothly, though a faint rubbing sensation remains due to the aluminum construction of the barrel. Of course, this has no effect on actual operation.
The front element shows cleaning marks and small scratches but no haze. The test-shoot results were excellent, which you can see in our sample gallery.
Beautifully serviced and comfortable to use — a Biotar you can enjoy without hesitation.
