Angenieux Zoom 45–90mm. Manufactured between 1968 and 1980, this was the first zoom lens offered by Leitz. Originally introduced for the Leicaflex system. Leica R mount, 3-cam. The serial number is in the 1.44 million range, which corresponds to Angenieux’s own numbering rather than Leitz. Produced in 1978.
The filter size is 67mm screw-in, or Series VIII filters can be inserted between the hood and the lens.
Featuring a complex optical construction of 12 groups and 15 elements, with a bright constant aperture of f2.8. At any focal length, it delivers a rendering reminiscent of Angenieux prime lenses, with a smooth and refined character. Especially at close distances, it produces a rich wide-open image with gentle flare and beautiful bokeh. Even when stopped down, a subtle softness remains—distinctly Angenieux. It offers a cinematic look and atmosphere.
Slim and simple, yet quite handsome in design. In recent years, it has also become a popular choice when paired with Leica SL series cameras.
Due to long-term use, there is some sheen to the paint surface, along with light scuffs and small scratches. There is also some uneven paint loss on parts of the vertical knurling of the barrel. However, there are no noticeable dents or major damage. Overall, it shows normal signs of age-appropriate use.
A full overhaul was completed in March 2026. Known as a lens that is quite challenging to service, this one also required considerable effort, but thanks to careful and thorough work, both the aperture and helicoid now operate extremely smoothly. For a lens with a relatively long barrel and solid weight, this stress-free handling is a significant advantage.
Angenieux zoom lenses tend to exhibit focus shift during zooming, and this example shows the same characteristic.
Under strong LED light, there are very minor signs of coating deterioration and a few extremely faint cleaning marks, but these are unlikely to affect actual shooting. There is no haze or fungus present, and the glass condition is quite good for an Angenieux zoom.
The results from actual shooting tests were also very favorable.
A genuine hood, hood cap, and rear cap are included.
