The legendary Thambar 90mm f2.2. Leica’s product code is TOODY. Announced in 1935, this example was produced in 1936 with a serial number in the 310,000 range. Optical construction is 3 groups and 4 elements. Filter size is E48. Distance scale is in meters.
The only soft focus lens ever made by Leica, it has gained renewed attention in recent years with the release of a modern reissue. For soft focus portrait photography, the dedicated filter is used in combination with the red aperture markings. For normal shooting without the filter, use the white aperture index.
This item is one of our previously sold pieces, cherished by the customer and now returned to us. The Thambar body shows marks from hood attachment and some paint loss on the knurled section, but there are no dents or dings, giving the impression that it has been carefully used over the years. Fully overhauled in 2021 and partially serviced in 2023, it still operates smoothly thanks to meticulous maintenance.
The front and rear elements show slight glass tanning, and there are two small spots on the middle element, but these will hardly affect actual photography. For a Thambar, the glass is quite clean. Rangefinder coupling is accurate, and the handling is excellent, making this Thambar a pleasure to use.
Essential Thambar accessories are included: the original filter, hood, hood cap, and also the original rear cap.
