Black/chrome Elmar 90mm. Leitz product code ELANG. Manufactured in 1938. Distance scale in meters. Compared to the early Fat Elmar, this version is also known as the Thin Elmar. Non-coated.
Its compact size allows it to slip quietly into your camera bag. In later years, the lens received coating, was converted to M mount and to a collapsible design, and remained in production until 1964—proof of its long-lasting popularity and trusted optical performance. Often seen as a typical shop-worn lens, but a properly serviced example will not disappoint. A lens that truly expands your photographic possibilities.
Brass is visible through the black paint, especially around the front edge, and there are traces of paint retouching on the upper part of the knurled helicoid. The chrome parts also show light signs of use such as faint scuffing, but there are no noticeable scratches or dents.
A full overhaul was carried out in December 2025. Both the aperture ring and the helicoid operate smoothly and comfortably with no stress. Rangefinder coupling and focus accuracy are excellent. There are a few cleaning marks on the front element and a single hairline mark on the rear element. No haze is present, and the glass is clear and bright. Actual shooting tests produced very good results.
Third-party front and rear lens caps and a Bakelite case are included.
Fully overhauling an Elmar 90mm is, admittedly, a rather eccentric thing to do, and as with this example, it is hardly a profitable endeavor. Still, these days we simply hope that more people can experience and appreciate the wonderful rendering of the Elmar 90mm.
