Nickel Summar collapsible type. Following the earliest fixed mount version known as the Hyottoko Summar and the black front Summar, this is the all-nickel barrel version. Leitz product code is SUMUS. Serial number in the 210,000 range, manufactured in 1934. Distance scale in feet. Straight helicoid. Hexagonal aperture. Double-Gauss optical formula with 4 groups and 6 elements. Aperture scale is the Continental style (f2, 2.2, 3.2 and so on). This example has faint later Leitz blue coating applied to several surfaces.
At full aperture it shows the peripheral flow characteristic of large aperture lenses of the era, along with the rich bokeh of the Double-Gauss design. The thoroughly vintage look matches perfectly with Leica DII and DIII bodies of the same period. The Summar series evolved from the Hyottoko version to the black front and then to this all-nickel model, though chrome models were also sold at the same time despite their smaller production numbers. Completing the set would be a delight, but the Hyottoko chrome and the Tropen version are the real hurdles.
There is minimal wear from use, with no noticeable scratches or dings. The collapsible section also shows little wear, and the nickel plating shines beautifully, giving it a very nice appearance. Fully overhauled in September 2025, with the aperture and helicoid operating smoothly and precise rangefinder coupling. The front element shows a few cleaning marks and slight coating deterioration, but the glass is still quite clean for a Summar. The middle element has some pinpoint glass deterioration, but none of these issues should affect photography. Test shots produced excellent results, which can be viewed in the sample gallery. Comes with the original bakelite front cap and a metal rear cap.
