※About rarity

Leitz code name HEGRA. The Hektor 73mm f1.9, a pre-war medium telephoto masterpiece by Leitz. The first large-aperture medium telephoto lens for Leica. This example features a black paint and chrome finish, with a straight helicoid design.

The serial number of this piece is in the 140,000 range. According to Leitz serial number records, it dates to 1932, though it may also have been produced around 1933–1934, as it shares characteristics with the all-black straight helicoid versions found within the same number range. Feet scale. Uncoated. Rangefinder coupled. Filter size is 39mm screw-in.

The Hektor 73mm evolved through several variations: the earliest versions were not rangefinder coupled, followed by rangefinder-coupled models with a rotating helicoid. Later, the design shifted to a straight helicoid in both all-black and this black/chrome finish, in order to accommodate Agfa color photography accessories, before eventually returning to a rotating helicoid. Given its large aperture, maintaining precise rangefinder coupling may have been a challenge.

Wide open, it produces a soft, gently glowing image with a classic old lens character. Stopping down increases resolution significantly, bringing out strong subject definition. The sweet spot is around f3.2 to f4.5, though the soft rendering near wide open is part of this lens’s true charm.

Shows overall signs of use, with paint loss visible on the edges. A great piece for those who want to carry it without hesitation and enjoy shooting freely.

Fully overhauled in March 2026, including focus calibration. The aperture and helicoid now operate with a smooth, well-damped feel. Prior to servicing, it tended toward back focus across the range, but after careful adjustment, focus now snaps precisely into place where intended on the rangefinder. While many 73mm lenses can have questionable coupling accuracy, this example performs reliably even wide open.

The glass is clear with no haze and offers a crisp view. As expected for a pre-war lens, there are slight signs of aging such as very light yellowing and minor spots, but overall it remains in excellent condition for a Hektor.

Comes with the original hood. The hood cap is non-original, but matches the look nicely. Ready for practical use.
