Angenieux 35mm f3.5 Type X1. Manufactured by P. Angenieux in France. A rare Leica mount version with rangefinder coupling. Filter diameter is 34mm.
Serial number 95xxx, made in 1947 — a lens from just after the war.
The aluminum barrel weighs only 59 grams, making it extremely compact and lightweight. The uniquely stylish design clearly reflects Angenieux’s independent aesthetic vision.
Tessar-type optical formula with 3 groups and 4 elements. Uncoated glass, distance scale in meters. Production of the Type X1 is said to have lasted only about four years, until 1950. In addition to the Leica version, there were Contax (slightly larger and heavier) and Alpa mounts, all of which are rare.
The anodized aluminum finish of the Angenieux X1 and 50mm f1.8 Type S1 often fades to blue or green, but early examples like this one turn to a brown, amber tone. This piece shows that beautiful amber patina, and the matching original front and rear caps have aged in the same way, giving it a truly distinctive character. Few lenses age this gracefully.
Mounted on a well-worn Leica M3, M2, or M4 black paint body—or on a black Leica DII or DIII with a black WEISU finder—it would represent the pinnacle of vintage Leica style.
It has beautifully faded to a copper tone, exuding a truly appealing vintage atmosphere. A perfect and irresistible aging for those who love classic patina. It must have been well cared for, as there are no noticeable dings or dents on the exterior.
Fully overhauled in September 2025. Aperture, focusing helicoid, and rangefinder coupling all operate smoothly and accurately.
The front element shows slight tanning and a few small fungus marks, but no prominent cleaning scratches are visible.
Test shots produced excellent results. The Angenieux Type X1 is often troublesome with decentering or coupling issues, but this one performs remarkably well.
Comes with original front and rear caps full of vintage charm.
