The origin of the Leica M series, the Leica M3. This is an early version from the 870,000 serial number range, featuring the desirable “fat strap lugs” and double stroke mechanism. Manufactured in 1957, it comes with a self-timer. The pressure plate was updated from glass to metal, and the ASA scale goes up to 1000. The legendary Leica MP was also produced during this era, sharing many characteristics with this model. It is a machine that truly reflects the golden age of Leitz, when quality was at its peak.
The double stroke mechanism offers a shorter winding stroke, allowing for a satisfyingly crisp and rhythmic advance — you’ll find yourself wanting to fire the shutter just for the feel of it. Even during inspection, our staff (myself) found it hard to resist enjoying a few dry shots with this Leica.
While it shows some signs of use, all parts and the leatherette are original, making it a perfect choice for practical use.
There are some scuffs around the Leica logo and serial number on the top cover, as well as minor wear and slight paint loss on the back door. The bottom plate shows moderate rubbing consistent with regular use. However, for an early Leica M3, this is considered to be in fairly good condition.
It was overhauled in 2024, and all functions operate smoothly. As is common with the M3, there is slight separation visible around the edges inside the viewfinder, but the clarity remains excellent.
This is an ideal camera for those who wish to enjoy shooting without concern.
