Summaron 28mm f5.6, commonly known as the Red Summaron. Although Leica has recently released a reissue of this lens, this is the original version. Leica screw mount, product code SNOOX, manufactured in 1958.
The Red Summaron debuted in 1955 as the successor to the Hektor 28mm f6.3 and was produced until 1963. It is one stop faster than the Hektor 28mm f6.3. The filter size remains the same as the Hektor, a 36mm slip-on type (A36).
Crafted during Leitz’s golden postwar era, the lens is celebrated not only for its superb optical performance but also for the exceptional quality of its chrome finish and timeless design that shows no sign of age even after nearly 70 years. Its enduring popularity is well deserved. When fitted with the dedicated square hood SOOBK, its appearance is simply stunning.
This item was originally sold by our shop and has now returned to us after being carefully used by its owner. Welcome back!
Despite being over 60 years old and passing through several hands, the satin chrome finish still shines beautifully, and the barrel remains in remarkably fine condition with barely any wear or scratches.
Although it was fully overhauled five years ago when last sold, we have carried out another full overhaul in October 2025 for this resale. Both the aperture and focusing helicoid operate smoothly with a pleasingly dampened feel, rangefinder coupling is precise, and focus accuracy is excellent.
There are a few extremely fine cleaning marks and slight coating deterioration on inner elements, but these have no impact on image quality. The glass condition is outstanding for a Red Summaron. Test shots also produced excellent results.
Comes with a genuine front cap.
