Summilux 35mm f1.4 1st version, commonly known as the Steel Rim. Serial number in the 1.77 million range, manufactured in 1960 by Leitz Canada. Leitz product code: OCLUX / 11870. A semi-wide-angle lens designed for the Leica M2.
Constructed with 7 elements in 5 groups. When shot wide open, it produces a beautifully dreamy and veiled glow. As you stop down, it delivers crisp and sharp rendering. The clarity and three-dimensional feel when slightly stopped down are truly outstanding.
All generations of the Summilux are captivating, but this first version stands out in both style and craftsmanship. The appearance with the dedicated OLLUX hood is especially striking. Although the price has risen significantly in recent years, this rare lens still manages to justify its allure.
This lens was cherished by a long-time customer of our store for decades. It shows barely any signs of use and retains the atmosphere of a brand-new item from its original era.
Fully overhauled in July 2025, it now offers exceptionally smooth and refined operation thanks to meticulous servicing. The helicoid and aperture ring feel premium, and rangefinder coupling is spot on. Even at full aperture, focusing is precise and reliable.
The glass is clear, with strong coatings intact on all surfaces and no haze. There are a few extremely light cleaning marks on the inner elements, but they are unlikely to affect image quality. Even before servicing, this lens already delivered excellent results, and the post-overhaul test shots confirmed its superb performance.
Sample images are available on our gallery site. This is a lens that reveals noticeable sharpness and contrast improvements with just a one-stop adjustment—part of the joy in using it.
Includes our custom-made FB-05 front cap for Steel Rim lenses, an original E41 UVa filter, and a rear cap.
Among the many Steel Rim lenses we’ve handled over the years, this ranks as one of the best in condition—a truly rare find.
