※About rarity

This Leica IIIa, with a serial number in the 210,000 range, was originally manufactured in 1936 and later officially converted by Leitz into a IIIf Black Dial model. It still retains several distinctive features of the IIIa, including the separated viewfinder windows, various knobs, and the baseplate, preserving the character of the earlier model. Above all, the compact body size inherited from the original Leica A-type continues to charm Leica enthusiasts. It is, essentially, a IIIf in a IIIa-sized body.

Leitz’s factory conversion involved specially made parts tailored to each original model, reflecting a meticulous and costly process. This refined Leica exemplifies the uncompromising craftsmanship that Leitz is known for.

This is a body that shows clear signs of long-term use, with light scuff marks visible on the top cover and bottom plate. There is a noticeable ding on the tripod socket corner of the base plate, though there is no distortion or denting. The vulcanite covering has been replaced in recent years, but the finish is very natural and unobtrusive.

This camera was in regular use by one of our customers until recently, and the film advance and shutter operation remain smooth and reliable. There is some dust inside the viewfinder, but it does not affect visibility, and the rangefinder patch remains clearly defined.

Factory-converted IIIa models are relatively rare, making this a great choice for those who want something a little different. A highly practical camera for everyday use.
