This Leica A model from 1926, originally equipped with the early Elmar lens, was later factory-upgraded by Leitz to a DII Chrome version. Overseas, such upgrades are often referred to as factory conversions. The serial number is in the 23xx range, a block where examples with arrowhead engravings are sometimes found. The Elmar lens bears meter distance markings, and the tripod socket is of the large-thread type.
Judging by the distinctive shiny chrome plating, the conversion likely took place in the late 1930s. It is said that Leitz prepared dedicated upgrade parts specifically for such conversions, which were different from those of standard models. This level of craftsmanship and investment is nearly unthinkable in today’s disposable era.
The base is a four-digit A-type Leica in the 2000-range. Typically, early A-type upgrades result in black-painted DII, DIII, or even skip ahead to IIIf models. However, this particular unit is an unusual and eye-catching shiny chrome DII.

There is a slight scuff on the base plate, but overall signs of use are minimal. The body and lens shine beautifully. It was in active use until recently, so you can purchase with confidence.
While it underwent an overhaul in 2021, we performed a full overhaul of the lens once again for this resale. Just like after the previous service, two tiny spot-like fungus marks are visible on the rear element, but they have virtually no effect on image quality.
Comes with a flat cap in matching shiny chrome from the same era.
