Angénieux 28mm f3.5 Type R11 in Leica screw mount. Late version. Made by P. Angenieux in France, manufactured in 1957. Rangefinder-coupled with feet scale. A 6-element, 6-group retrofocus design featuring beautiful purple-toned coatings.
The front end of the lens is slightly larger, giving it a distinct shape with a narrow waist. The combination of deep blue anodized aluminum and satin chrome knurling creates a stylish two-tone finish—unmistakably French elegance. There are few 28mm lenses with such a refined aesthetic.
Angénieux 28mm lenses in L-mount were produced in very limited numbers, and this late version is even rarer. Its unique styling suits not only Barnack Leicas but also looks stunning on black paint or modern digital M bodies.
Incidentally, the filter thread for the Type R11 differs between versions: 56mm on the early type and 58.5mm on the later type—often confusing Angénieux users. This one comes with a hood that allows for 62mm screw-in filters.
A rare and collectible piece.
This is an item previously sold by our store. The customer took great care of it, and it remains in excellent condition, unchanged from the time of the last sale.
There is slight fading on the lens barrel, but overall it shows minimal signs of use and retains a beautiful appearance. For an L-mount Angenieux, which are often heavily used, this one is in notably clean condition. No dents or impact marks are present.
In 2024, it underwent a full overhaul including focus adjustment. Thanks to the meticulous servicing, the aperture and helicoid operate very smoothly. Rangefinder coupling is also spot on.
While coating deterioration can be seen on several elements, it should not affect actual image quality. The coating remains well intact across all surfaces.
Although this is from the previous sale, sample images are available on our test gallery. We hope you take a look. All shots were taken wide open at f3.5, showcasing truly beautiful tones.
