Early model Leica M3, serial number 7002xx, manufactured in 1954, the first year of M3 production.
Although this unit does not have the stepped top plate (both stepped and non-stepped versions were intermixed even within single-digit serial numbers), it retains numerous features of the early models and remains in fully original condition.
Notable details include the absence of a screw at the 12 o'clock position on the lens mount, the ASA 200 back door, a slightly pink-tinted indicator, early-style interior of the back door, a chassis design shared with prototype M3s and stepped models, the half-moon stainless steel stopper on the accessory shoe, and a slotted screw on the center of the rewind knob.
Like the early Leica Model A, the early M3 reveals more fascinating details the deeper you explore. It is a truly profound and endlessly intriguing Leica.

There are some minor repair marks on the vulcanite, but otherwise this is a well-preserved early M3 in original condition, including all exterior parts. While there is no slant beside the rangefinder window as seen on some with-corner models, both slanted and non-slanted variations are known to exist, so this can be considered original.
The top cover shows slight wear from attaching and removing a light meter, and the baseplate has numerous fine scuffs and small scratches.
It underwent a full overhaul in 2022. Thanks to this careful maintenance, all operations remain smooth. The shutter curtain still retains its flexibility and has not been replaced, out of respect for originality, and it operates perfectly without issue. The shutter is in excellent condition, and the viewfinder is bright and clear.
Early M3s with three-digit serial numbers are becoming increasingly rare. This original example would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
