Leica Model A with old Elmar lens, manufactured in 1930. Serial number 21xxx. The helicoid distance scale is marked in feet. This particular Elmar allows close focusing down to 1.5 feet, approximately 45 cm. All parts remain original from the period, with the fine-grain vulcanite covering. The shutter release is the standard type, which came after the mushroom and dimple styles. Normally, within this serial range, production had already shifted to the new Elmar, but this camera is fitted with the earlier version. It is likely a transitional piece and appears to be among the very last batches of the Model A with the old Elmar.
It shows signs of being well used yet carefully preserved, giving the impression that it was cherished for many years. After recent servicing, it has been refreshed, and even after 95 years it still delivers excellent image quality. A camera that is both a joy to shoot with and to admire.
The nameplate of the Elmar shows slight waviness, and the nickel plating on the shutter release has worn off, revealing the brass beneath, but no significant dings are visible. The black paint on the areas touched by hand has worn naturally, giving it a very appealing character. There are no signs of touch-up or repainting. The vulcanite covering is entirely original.
In August 2025 it underwent a full overhaul including shutter replacement. All operations feel smooth, offering a wonderfully gentle handling experience that lets you fully enjoy the essence of an early Leica. The lens shows very faint cleaning marks, but they will hardly affect actual photography. Film advance and other mechanisms have been checked and work properly.
A genuine lens cap, matching the period and atmosphere, is included.
