Leica M3, later version with single-stroke film advance. Serial number in the 1.05 million range, manufactured in 1962. Leitz product code IGEMO.
Released in 1954, the Leica M3 established the golden era of Leitz with its quick and secure M-mount lens system, superb integrated rangefinder view, design that embodied functional beauty, robust body ensuring stable operation, and unmatched build quality that no other maker could rival.
This later version of the M3 addressed minor shortcomings found in the earlier model and introduced the more standard single-stroke film advance mechanism.
From the original M3, the M series continued with models such as M2, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8, M9, M10, and M11. Yet the iconic silhouette that instantly identifies a Leica M body finds its origin and essence in this very M3.
For 50mm lens use, the M3 is still considered the best model, thanks to its unparalleled viewfinder performance.
This item was previously sold by our shop and has now returned after being carefully used by its former owner.
Its condition remains unchanged from the last sale. Light scuff marks can be seen on the top cover and base plate from regular use, but there are no dents or prominent scratches. The vulcanite covering and all parts remain original from the time of manufacture.
It underwent a full overhaul by a professional technician in 2024, resulting in smooth operation of the winding mechanism and shutter dial. In addition, the viewfinder was cleaned again in May 2025.
There is a slight separation in the viewfinder prism near the edges—a common occurrence in M3 models—but the view remains clear.
A well-timed and practical choice for those looking for a reliable user camera.
