Tele-Elmarit 90mm f2.8, black chrome finish. Made by Leitz Canada. This is an early version of the black barrel model, featuring the bold and distinctive red scale. Leitz catalog number is 11800. Serial number in the 2.14 million range, manufactured in 1965.
Despite being a telephoto lens, its overall length is close to that of a 50mm lens, making it compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand. The barrel features exquisite knurling reminiscent of early Summilux models, giving it a refined appearance. With a well-balanced weight and smooth helicoid positioning, it handles beautifully. The f2.8 aperture provides ample brightness for practical use, and its slightly soft rendering is known for producing beautiful image aesthetics. This is a compact medium telephoto lens from Leitz that proves very handy to have tucked into your camera bag.
The black barrel version of the Tele-Elmarit with red lettering is quite rare. It follows immediately after the first chrome-barrel version introduced in 1964 and was produced in small numbers before transitioning to the yellow scale like other Leitz lenses. The change in lettering color significantly alters the overall impression. Its appearance closely resembles the black paint Summilux 50mm f1.4, making it a great match for black-painted Leica M3, M2, or M4 bodies.
Compatible hood 12575. Filter size E39.
There are tiny, pinhead-sized spots of very slight paint loss scattered across the barrel, but there are no noticeable scratches or dings, and overall, it shows minimal signs of use with a very clean appearance.
It underwent a full overhaul in July 2025. The aperture clicks firmly into place, and the helicoid operates smoothly, offering excellent handling. Rangefinder coupling and focus accuracy are also in great shape.
The lens shows only minimal coating degradation, with no wipe marks or haze, and the glass remains clear. Actual shooting tests yielded excellent results.
Comes with an original rear cap.
