※About rarity

Elmar 50mm f3.5. The version with the depth-of-field scale printed in red, commonly known as the Red Elmar or Red Scale. Leitz product code ELMAR. Serial number in the 1.16 million range, manufactured in 1954. Optical construction of 4 elements in 3 groups. Coating colors show blue, purple, and amber reflections. Filter size A36. Distance scale on the helicoid is in meters.

Produced for more than 30 years since the era of the Leica A, this is the final version of the A36 Elmar 50mm f3.5. After this model, the design changed to the E39 type, and later evolved into the f2.8 version with the adoption of new glass types.

As the ultimate development of the A36 Elmar, the lens shows excellent build quality, with a solid feel to the barrel and beautifully finished satin chrome plating.

The correct original hood is the FISON. The Flashback original Elmar hood FB-07, which allows aperture operation while the hood remains attached, also makes an excellent companion.

A very clean Red Elmar with only light signs of use. The scuffs on the collapsible section are minimal, and it pairs beautifully with a clean body.

Fully overhauled in February 2026, including focus adjustment. The aperture and helicoid now operate with a smooth, damped feel, and the rangefinder coupling is spot on.

There are minor cleaning marks on the front element, but the glass is clear with no haze and excellent transparency.

The results of our test shooting were also excellent. It produces very sharp images even wide open, making this a fine performing example. We hope you will take a look at the sample images in our test gallery.

A period-correct genuine front cap is included.
