Early version of the first-generation Elmarit 28mm f2.8, known as the Red Scale variant for its red lettering. Often referred to as the 9-element gem. Leica product code is 11801. Serial number is in the 2.19 million range, manufactured in 1966. Made by Leitz Canada. The infinity lock is finished in black paint.
It features a 6-group, 9-element non-retrofocus optical design, with a rear element that protrudes significantly. Please note that it cannot be mounted on Leica M5 or CL bodies due to interference with the metering arm.
Its sharply contoured barrel design, bold red engravings, and distinctive helicoid knob with stopper make it the most stylish and popular among all Elmarit generations.
When the glass is in good condition, this lens delivers sharp results even wide open, with beautifully soft bokeh. Some 9-element versions tend to show internal separation that resembles haze in the middle elements, often leading to reduced image quality. However, this particular lens shows no such issues and offers excellent performance.
Compatible filters include E48 screw-in type, or Series 7 filters when used with the 12501 hood.
The Elmarit 1st is known for its excellent image quality, and as a result, many examples have seen extensive use. However, this particular unit has retained its beautiful black chrome finish, and the stopper paint is still intact.
It underwent a full overhaul including focus adjustment in June 2025. The operation of the aperture, helicoid, and the fit of the stopper all feel exceptional. Rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned.
The glass is clear overall, with only minor cleaning marks and light scuffing on the front element, as well as some slight coating deterioration. However, there is no balsam separation or haze.
Test shots turned out excellent. Samples are available in our image gallery. At wide open aperture, it produces a soft flare while still maintaining solid resolution at the center.
