This particular unit is a rare type with Taylor, Taylor & Hobson engraved on one side of the barrel and **U.S. Pat. Nr.2019985** on the other. In the Leica collector world, it’s said that the more engravings a lens has, the more prestige it carries—making this quite the brag-worthy piece.
Serial number is in the 820,000 range, manufactured in 1950, with distance scale in feet.
The Summarit is an improved version of the prewar Xenon 50mm f1.5, originally designed by Schneider. It retains the same 5-group 7-element optical formula, but uses newer types of glass for enhanced performance.
Before the introduction of the Summilux in 1961, this was Leica’s fastest lens. Wide open, it delivers a soft and elegant rendering with characteristic glow. Stopping down significantly increases contrast, transforming the image into something sharp and rich in tone.
Filter thread is E41, and since this is the early version, it also accepts slip-on type filters. The correct original hood is the square-shaped XOONS.
This lens was previously sold by our store and has now made its way back to us, having been carefully used and well-maintained by the customer.
There is a small mark near the screw next to the Taylor & Hobson engraving on the barrel, along with a few faint scuffs, but for a Summarit, it is in remarkably clean cosmetic condition.
It underwent a full overhaul in July 2025. Thanks to precise servicing, the helicoid feels exceptionally smooth, without the stiffness often associated with Summarit lenses. Rangefinder coupling is spot on across the entire range.
The glass is also in excellent condition for a Summarit, with only a few extremely light cleaning marks on the front element. The coating on each surface remains intact, and the optics are clear with no haze. Test shots produced outstanding results.
