Elmar 50mm f3.5. This is the so-called Red Elmar or Red Scale version, with the depth of field scale engraved in red. Leitz product code is ELMAR. Serial number is in the 1.16 million range, manufactured in 1954. Optical design is 3 elements in 4 groups. Filter size is A36. The helicoid distance scale is in feet.
Produced for over 30 years since the era of the Leica A, this is the last version of the Elmar 50mm f3.5 with the A36 filter mount. As the final evolution of the A36 Elmar, it stands out for the solidity of its barrel construction and the fine texture of its matte chrome finish, reflecting its remarkable level of refinement.
The correct original hood is the FISON. Alternatively, the Flashback original Elmar hood FB-07, which allows aperture operation while the hood is attached, also makes an excellent companion.

There are faint scuff marks on the nameplate and the edges around the mount, but otherwise the barrel shows hardly any signs of use and remains in very clean condition. Wear on the collapsible section is also minimal, and the chrome plating shines brightly. The matte chrome finish is equally beautiful.
Fully overhauled in August 2025, with careful servicing that has resulted in a very smooth feel to both the aperture and the focusing helicoid. The matte lacquer for internal flare reduction has also been neatly reapplied, promising tighter, more controlled rendering.
The front element shows a few extremely fine cleaning marks, but these have virtually no effect on actual photography. No haze or fungus is present, and the glass is clear and bright. Test shots produced excellent results.
