The 3rd generation Summicron 50mm f2, now officially named Summicron-M, adopting the modern naming convention. Leitz product code is 11819. Serial number is in the 2.98 million range, manufactured in 1979 by Leitz Canada. The optical design was developed by Dr. Walter Mandler. The construction changed from the 5-element, 6-group formula of the 2nd generation to a 6-element, 4-group configuration.
This particular lens is an early version of the 3rd-generation Summicron, distinguished by its prominent focusing tab, often referred to overseas as the "Tiger Claw".
Weighing just 196g, it is lightweight and compact for an f2 lens. The minimum focusing distance is 0.7 meters.
While it may not have a luxurious appearance, it offers improved color balance and contrast rendition, making it a highly practical and user-friendly lens.
There is a tiny paint loss about the size of a pinhead at the tip of the filter ring, but aside from that, there are hardly any signs of use such as scuff marks, and the barrel is in excellent cosmetic condition.
Fully overhauled in May 2025. When rotating the helicoid ring from close focus to infinity, there is a very faint sensation of the rings lightly rubbing against each other, but it does not affect operation, and the overall feel is smooth. The aperture ring clicks with a pleasant damped feel, offering a comfortable user experience. Rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned, and focusing is accurate.
There is slight coating deterioration visible, but overall, the glass is clear and clean. Test shots showed excellent results.
Comes with a plastic 12538 hood, a hood cap, and the original matching-number box.
