Summicron 50mm f2 1st, the highly sought-after later version with a rigid barrel. Leica M mount. Leitz product code is SOSIC, later changed to 11818. Serial number in the 2,090,000 range, manufactured in 1965. Distance scale shows both feet and meters. This is a 6-group, 7-element optical design unique to Leitz, often referred to as an "air lens" due to its high transparency.
A masterpiece of functional beauty, with a knurled focusing ring that offers excellent handling and a refined appearance. Known for high contrast and consistent image performance even at full aperture, this lens remains highly popular. Its timeless design pairs beautifully with not only silver Leica bodies from the M3 and M2 era, but also with black paint and black chrome bodies, including modern digital Leica models.
Filter size is E39. Compatible lens hoods include IROOA, ITDOO, and 12585.
The barrel shows only minimal signs of use such as faint surface marks, but no noticeable scratches or dings. Overall, it has a clean and well-maintained appearance.
Fully overhauled in June 2025. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture ring and helicoid offer a smooth and pleasant operational feel. On our M240 and M10 bodies, the rangefinder coupling shows a very slight front focus tendency wide open at the closest distance, but focus is accurate when stopped down slightly. On the M11, rangefinder coupling is accurate even at minimum focus distance.
The front element has a small spot of coating deterioration, and there is a slight haze near the edges of the middle element, but neither has any noticeable impact on image quality. Test shots confirmed the crisp and sharp rendering characteristic of Summicron lenses.
Comes with original front and rear caps.
