Angénieux Zoom 45-90mm f2.8, made in France. Produced between 1968 and 1980, this was Leica’s first zoom lens, originally introduced for the Leicaflex system.
This particular example features the Leica R mount with 2 cams. The serial number, in the 1.38 million range, is assigned by Angénieux rather than Leitz and indicates production in 1973.
It has a complex optical formula of 12 groups and 15 elements, and boasts a constant maximum aperture of f2.8 throughout the zoom range. It accepts 67mm screw-in filters or Series 8 filters when used with the dedicated hood.
At any focal length, the lens offers signature Angénieux rendering—smooth and refined, reminiscent of a prime lens. Especially in close-up shots, it delivers rich wide-open images with soft flares and beautiful bokeh. Even when stopped down, the softness lingers gently, a hallmark of Angénieux's character.
This is a beautifully preserved example with only minimal signs of use, retaining the look and feel of a near-new lens. Among the many worn and glossy units commonly seen, it is rare to find an Angénieux Zoom that still maintains its smooth matte black paint finish.
Fully overhauled in July 2025, the operation of the aperture, helicoid, and zoom rings is all smooth and fluid. At close range to about 2 meters, a slight shift in focus due to zooming can be observed, which is a characteristic of this lens. However, focus shift is very minimal for an Angénieux zoom, and overall usability is excellent.
There are a few faint cleaning marks on the inner elements, but they do not affect image quality. No haze is present, making this one of the better-conditioned Angénieux Zooms available.
Includes lens hood, Series 8 UVa filter, front and rear caps, and case.
