Summicron 50mm f/2 – 2nd Generation Early Transitional Model
This is an extremely rare early version of the 2nd generation Summicron 50mm f/2, with a serial number in the 2.26 million range, manufactured in 1968. Unique to this serial range, it features a newly designed 5-group 6-element optical formula housed in the earlier 1st generation barrel—an in-between model that has come to be known in recent years as the Transitional Model, especially among overseas collectors. The Leitz product code is 11817, the same as the later standard 2nd-generation 6-element version.
From the Leica Model A, to the M3, early versions of the Summicron and Summilux 35mm & 50mm, the legendary Noctilux f/1.2, and more recently the APO-Summicron 50mm, Leica's early models have always been crafted with extraordinary attention to detail. These “first editions” consistently deliver excellence in design, build quality, and optical performance—leaving a lasting impression.
This early 6-element version is no exception. It carries forward the clean, elegant design language of the late 1st-generation Summicrons and pairs beautifully with both black chrome and black paint Leica bodies.
The transitional version has long been regarded for its exceptional optical performance, and this particular lens certainly lives up to that reputation. It delivers outstanding image quality—a truly impressive performer.
A rare and collectible piece.
This lens was previously sold by our shop and has now returned to us after being carefully used by its owner. It shows almost no signs of use and remains in exceptionally clean condition—close to mint or like-new.
It was fully overhauled by us in 2023, and all operations now feel exceptionally smooth. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on, delivering impressively sharp results.
Under magnification, a few extremely faint cleaning marks can be seen, but there are no noticeable scratches or haze. The glass is clean and matches the pristine exterior.
Every example of this very early 2nd-generation Summicron we’ve handled has delivered superb performance, and this one is no exception. It offers beautifully sharp rendering and outstanding rangefinder accuracy, allowing for confident shooting all the way down to its minimum focusing distance of 0.7m.

Comes with a genuine black-rimmed UVa filter, front cap, plastic case, and an original box (serial number does not match).
