Leica DII in chrome finish. This particular unit features the highly reflective shiny chrome variant, known for its dazzling appearance and striking presence. With a serial number in the 100,000 range, it was manufactured in 1934. Leitz's code name for the body alone is AIROOCHROM, while the set with lens and body together was referred to as ABOOTCHROM. For reference, the black DII body alone was coded LYKAN up until 1934, and then AIROO... from 1934 to 1948—quite the convoluted system, isn’t it?

The Leica DII was introduced in 1932 as Leica’s first camera with built-in rangefinder coupling—an epoch-making model in the brand’s history. Initially available only in black paint, a chrome version was released in 1933 thanks to advancements in plating technology.

While features like slow shutter speeds, diopter correction, and strap lugs would come later with the DIII, the DII’s minimal functionality and compact form factor offer a uniquely satisfying handling experience. The 1:1 magnification rangefinder/viewfinder is easy to focus with, making this model not only historically significant but also practical for actual use.

This is an item previously sold by our store. It was thoroughly enjoyed by the customer and has returned to us as part of an upgrade.

There is a very slight dent above the serial number and light scuffing in various areas, but the chrome finish on the top cover retains its beautiful shine. The base plate shows some surface wear, and concentric marks from mounting and unmounting are visible around the tripod socket.

In 2025, the shutter and winding mechanism were serviced and adjusted, and the camera still offers a smooth, satisfying operation.

The viewfinder shows some degradation of the half mirror, but the rangefinder patch remains sufficiently contrasted for accurate focusing.

Overall, it’s a very pleasant camera to use.
