※About rarity

Legendary Nikkor-P.C 8.5cm f2. Early white-barrel version. Nikon S mount with external bayonet lugs. The Nikkor 85mm was introduced in 1948. Sonnar-type design with 3 groups and 5 elements. Filter size is 48mm. Distance scale on the helicoid is in feet.

Wide open, it delivers a slightly soft rendering with rich tonal gradation and high contrast beautifully balanced. Stopped down to around f4, vignetting all but disappears, resulting in an even image across the frame, with increased contrast and a transformation into a crisp, highly sharp rendering.

A monumental lens famously used and praised by D.D. Duncan during the Korean War, helping to introduce the excellence of Japanese-made lenses to the world. Highly recommended to enjoy as well on modern mirrorless digital cameras via an adapter.

There are two small pinpoint marks around the 15 feet distance scale. Aside from some light rub marks consistent with normal use, the chrome barrel retains a glossy finish and remains in very attractive condition.

Fully overhauled in November 2025. Both the aperture ring and helicoid operate smoothly with no stress, an essential point for a lens of this weight.

On the front element, there are two extremely fine cleaning marks that are only visible under strong LED light. No haze, fungus, or other issues are present, and the glass is clear and transparent. Actual shooting tests produced excellent results. The 85mm finder also offers a clear and pleasant view.

The lens comes with the original hood, caps, case, and a finder that matches its overall character.
